Reading My World

At school, my teachers gave me motivation by showing joy when I answered a question correctly. I have a younger sister, and I hope to inspire her to go through what I have gone through because I want her to follow her dreams. The support I received felt like solving math problems. My family let me sound words out step by step, almost like working through an equation. Even when I got struck, they gave me the patience to try again, just as you would when reworking a calculation. Each success was like adding another number to the sum, building my confidence piece by piece. Throughout, those small steps became the formula that helped me create a strong foundation.

I was fully encouraged because of what they had offered help, guidance, support. They didn’t give up on me for any reason they just had patience when showing me what they know, like their own knowledge. My earliest experiences with learning started by sounding out letters and being able to read a book. Their ways lit up so much that I felt a spark inside me. I began to feel literate when a teacher applauded me for reading aloud in class. That moment gave me confidence because it showed me that I could pronounce the words correctly and follow along with the story, which made me proud of the way I was making. I also felt literate when I was able to help my classmates with their reading and homework. Explaining things to them showed me that I really understood the assignment myself, and it made me feel more supportive at the time. All of my experiences were important because they gave me pride and purpose, and they motivated me to keep improving so I could continue to help others and succeed in school.

But my favorite experience is back in high school, at the time I was challenged with advanced math classes. A key part of my journey was my math teacher. Even though her focus was numbers, she supported my growth throughout the two years I was her student by carefully guiding me through word problems, written instructions, and explanations that were sometimes both reading and numbers. Inside the school her guidance taught me to slow down, read through the text, and connect it with the math teaching she did. Outside of school, my family continued to encourage me, reminding me to practice and not to give up when I struggle the most. Together, the patience of my teacher and the support of my family helped me strengthen my lit learning during these important high school years, preparing me for what comes next after graduation.

What frustrated me was the questions I had wrong on like quizzes or test scores would make me want to do better. A role model for me is going to be my grandparents because of their faith and their push for me to move forward. I feel confident and still improving as an educated person today. Each day is a new step and who doesn't know what is going to happen that day. I continue to use literacy by texting, messaging, social media, schoolwork, reading signs and menus. Each requires reading, looking, and writing are the main three. My family members will always continue to inspire my literacy today because they push my limits to keep learning, share advice, and remind me what I will need in the future.
